The LMDC (Liberia Medical and Dental Council) was established by an Act of the National Legislator and signed into law by Her Excellency, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia on March 25, 2010, to monitor and regulate all Health Workers and health institutions in the country.

Prior to 2010 the Council was a Board under the direct guidance of the Honorable Minster of Health and Social Welfare of Liberia. Unlike her predecessor, the Liberia Medical Board, the present Council is autonomous and has the power given to it by the Act to examine and issue licenses to all who qualify to practice the Medical profession in Liberia. It has several committees such as Executive Committee, The Examination and Credential Committee, the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee, Etc

1. Mandate of the Council Produced here is taken from Section 61.4 of the Act Establishing the Council and is to be a guide for all Health Professionals in the Republic of Liberia.

1.1 The Mandate of the Council includes but not limited to the following:

- Registration of all Physicians, Surgeons, Dental Surgeons, and all Allied-Mid-Level health professionals within the Republic of Liberia.

- Establishment of the procedures and guidelines for licensed Physicians, Surgeons, Dental Surgeons, and Allied Medical Professionals within the Republic of Liberia.

- Issuance of licenses to qualified and deserving Physicians, Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and Allied Medical Professionals within the Republic of Liberia who have graduated from a recognized and credible medical institution.

- Setting up procedures, guidelines and standards for the accreditation of all medical services and health training institutions in the Republic of Liberia.

2. Privileges and Disciplinary Restraints Binding on all Physicians, Surgeons, Dentists and Allied Medical Professionals Practicing in Liberia.

- A licensed to practice medicine in Liberia entitles or obligates the holder to work according to the rules and guidelines set down by the Medical and Dental Council of Liberia

- A license to practice medicines in Liberia subjects the individual practitioner to any sanctions due to any medical professional misconduct and malpractice carried out by the individual during the practice of the profession.
