Liberia currently has over 900 recognized healthcare institutions operating in urban and rural communities with little or no control due to years of obvious issues, mainly insufficient financial assistance, says Dr. Benetta C. Andrews, Chairperson of Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC).
She calls for increased budgetary allocation during her induction statement and seeks international partnership and support. The LMDC’s chairperson informed stakeholders that additional budgetary and logistical support would improve the institution’s policing role in medical practice, consequently combating unscrupulous individuals who prey on vulnerable people in poor health facilities nationwide.
We must exert every effortmaintainsure the advancements established by our forebined; she continues, “Give us the tools and enabling environment to work and watch the health system change for the better without fear or favor,” the LMDC Chairperson pleaded.
Dr. Andrews is pleading with the government to provide conditions for effective control of the country’s healthcare sector.
“Remember that the patient who is being subjected to wrongful medical practice would be you, me, or any of our relatives, she stressed.
Assuming that everything was in place and working properly, she continued, “Only a strong regulatory body that will be able to obtain substantiated data as to the clear picture of the health system will be able to verify this,” Dr. Andrews said.
She underscored the need for successful collaboration in the regulation of medical practice and stated that, once given the required authority, the LMDC will ensure that the right processes and practices are used at every level of medical practice throughout the country.
